Closing the Gap: Virtual Gang Training for Empowered Citizens and Law Enforcement
Presented by retired police lieutenant B.C. Sanders
B.C. Sanders*, recently retiring after a career full of dedication and breakthroughs, is not your typical former homicide lieutenant. From his days as a sergeant in the United States Army Infantry to becoming an acclaimed gang expert and speaker, Sanders' story is a heartfelt testament to innovation, commitment, and making a real difference in law enforcement.
Sanders played a crucial role in breaking apart deadly gangs, including orchestrating the downfall of a significant Blood set through a joint R.I.C.O. operation with the F.B.I., a feat that earned him accolades from the F.B.I. director himself. His knack for developing reliable sources and spearheading initiatives that cut down violence has not only saved lives but also made communities safer places to live.
Sanders has been a pioneer in education within the force, creating and delivering courses on Everything from gang identification and investigations to managing informants. These workshops, which run the gamut from 8 to 40 hours, have armed hundreds of law enforcement officers with critical skills at a time when such knowledge is increasingly rare.
Sanders once shared, "Everything from gangs, developing informants, body language, how to do surveillance, street level surveillance, proactive patrol management, how to actually develop gang units and gang strategies, like all this stuff that I've learned over two decades that I just assumed everybody else knew. But now we're seeing the void in the last five to probably seven years of lack of proactive policing. So those skills have been lost, and now the officers who've become supervisors don't have those skills either."
He's also candid about the current challenges in law enforcement, especially the struggle to implement proactive strategies effectively. "And so the more departments I talked to are now trying to stand up a proactive unit or a gang unit, and so their higher-ups don't have that background, so they don't know how to design it, and then they're fearful of it."
Sanders' mission has always been to do more than just teach tactics; he's pushed for a strategic rethink in policing, advocating for patience and long-term planning over immediate results. His conversations with various departments highlight a significant gap in today's law enforcement strategies—a gap he's committed to closing.
In times when gang violence and crime are constantly evolving, B.C. Sanders has emerged as a source of inspiration and change. His heartfelt dedication to mentoring the next wave of law enforcement officers promises that his influence will endure, nurturing safer communities through knowledgeable, strategic, and empathetic policing.
